The Greenville County Museum of Art (GCMA) is a South Carolina art museum situated in Greenville. Andrew Wyeth, Josef Albers, Jasper Johns (raised in South Carolina), Andy Warhol, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Ronnie Landfield, Helen Turner, Mary Tannahill, Eric Fischl, Marylyn Dintenfass, and Leon Golub are among the artists represented in the museum’s collections. Artists from the United States and South Carolina, such as Henrietta Johnston, are also represented. The American Association of Museums granted GCMA accreditation in 1973, and it was reaffirmed in 1986 and 1998. The Museum’s collections approach was updated in 1985 to focus on building a comprehensive overview of American art utilizing examples from the South. The Southern Collection, published by the GCMA in 1995, has 126 articles covering 146 distinct pieces in the collection. The Alliance of American Museums has fully accredited the Greenville County Museum of Art, making it one of 55 museums in South Carolina to do so. The Museum received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 1973, and it was reaffirmed in 1986, 1998, and 2009. The three of the museum’s most well-known holdings: The Southern Collection, a study of American art utilizing southern-related examples; Andrew Wyeth: The Greenville Collection; and a collection of contemporary art unparalleled in the state. From the colonial era to the present, the museum’s “Southern Collection” explores the range of American art and history through the lens of the Southern experience. A series of pre-Civil War vessels by African-American potter and poet David Drake, a collection of American Impressionism, and works by 20th-century artists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Romare Bearden, and Andy Warhol are among the highlights. The GCMA has a significant collection of modernist works by William H. Johnson, a South Carolina native and African-American artist. Individual pieces by twentieth-century masters such as George Bellows, Georgia O’Keeffe, Josef Albers, and Philip Guston may be found at the museum. Jasper Johns has 40 paintings in the collection, Stephen Scott Young has 68, and Andrew Wyeth has twenty-six. The GCMA is home to the largest and most complete collection of Wyeth watercolors owned by any public museum in the world. The Greenville County Museum Commission was founded by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1963. With the purchase of the Gassaway Mansion in 1958, the art organization got its first permanent home. The GCMA relocated into its modernist structure in 1974. The new structure has about 90,000 square feet of exhibition galleries, a museum store, art storage, a 190-seat auditorium, and studio teaching classrooms.
