The Historic West End of Greenville is home to a thriving arts and entertainment scene, as well as intriguing stores and top-notch restaurants. Commercial expansion expanded after the Civil War when phosphate and guano fertilizers made cotton production lucrative for upcountry farmers. Cotton and fertilizer warehouses sprung up all over the place, as did other economic operations that supported the region’s farmers. The West End was a prosperous business sector at the turn of the century, second only to Greenville’s downtown prominence. As the population of the area grew, so did the number of schools and churches. Chicora College for Women, located on an elevated position overlooking the river, was founded in 1893. The West End underwent a lot of transformations over the first three decades of the twentieth century. Textile mills began to be established outside of the city, and the earlier mills along the Reedy River had financial difficulties from 1895 to 1910. The area’s commercial activity switched from cotton to soft drink bottling and manufacture, and the arrival of the vehicle prompted the establishment of auto agencies and repair shops. During this time, new office and commercial buildings were also built to serve what was still a very important economic and residential neighborhood. The Fluor Field, Falls Park on the Reedy, is located in the heart of the historic West End. Among the various restaurants, boutiques, and art venues, the Peace Center, Warehouse Theater, Reedy River Amphitheater, Shoeless Joe Museum and Statue, and the Children’s Garden at Linky Stone Park are just a few of the attractions.
