Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University has “one of America’s greatest and most intriguing collections of European Old Master paintings,” and its Baroque paintings (from the 1600s) are considered one of the country’s most important collections. This gallery and museum have been accessible to the public since 1951 and attract people from all over the country. It specializes in religious art, mostly European Old Master paintings, but it also has lesser collections of sculpture, furniture, architectural elements, textiles, and ancient relics. The collection’s scope exposes the creative, social, and religious history of Western Europe from the 1300s to the 1800s on a grand scale, and contains works by renowned artists including Rubens, van Dyck, Reni, Tintoretto, Le Brun, Cranach, and Ribera, as well as prominent disciples of da Vinci and Rembrandt. The Bowen Collection of Antiquities contains antiquities from Israel, Egypt, and Rome. Over 400 religious original paintings and one of the best collections of European Old Masters paintings in the United States. The Bowen Collection of Antiquities contains antiquities from Israel, Egypt, and Rome. More than 1,000 ancient relics are among the 200 Gothic-style pieces, 100 distinct sculptures, 60 different textile patterns, and 200 Gothic-style pieces. Old Masters Paintings, Russian Iron, the Bowen Collection of Antiques, and more are among the collections. In the well-kept chambers of this wonderful gallery and museum, Baroque, Egyptian, and even modern art pieces are elegantly displayed. In 1948, Bob Jones Jr., the son and successor of Bob Jones Sr., the university’s founder, began collecting art. To construct a collection for the University, an acquisition fund was established to purchase western religious art. From Thanksgiving 1951 till the end of the year, the first 25 paintings in the collection were shown in two rooms next to the Bowen Collection of Antiquities. Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Jusepe de Ribera were among the artists represented in this modest gallery. The collection expanded quickly, and it was relocated to the new Fine Arts building in 1956. It had more than 200 works of art by 1962. In 1963, the gallery purchased the seven Benjamin West paintings, and in 1965, it relocated once more, this time to the university’s former dining hall. The Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery became an independent business in 1996, and its name was changed to Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery. Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University is now temporarily closed to the public for renovations as it works on a new facility outside of Bob Jones University’s campus that will make the collection more accessible. Many artworks, however, may be seen on campus and in museums all around the world.
